Some say that the math and verbal questions of the ACT are somewhat easier than those of the new, redesigned SAT. That may be true. Even if it is, though, you’ll have less time to do them, which will make things harder for you. In a way, that doesn’t matter – what test isn’t hard if you’re setting out to ace it? What really matters is learning as much as you can so that you make it easier to achieve the highest possible score.
That will mean, for instance, brushing up on some basic trigonometry so that you can handle the math section with confidence. It will mean becoming familiar with typical grammar topics, from subject-verb agreement to the six tenses to idioms. I’ll be giving you a refresher on the mechanics and usage of the English language: a very necessary part of ACT test prep. After we’re finished, you’ll not only know all about misplaced modifiers, sentence fragments, independent clauses, and paragraph organization, you’ll be able to employ good grammar and style to increase you rhetorical skills and write a killer essay.
One of the things you’ll need to know in order to do well on this test is science. Or rather, you’ll be tested on your scientific reasoning. That’s good news, because where most people forget the details of the science that they learned in school – such as the difference between meiosis and mitosis – the skills necessary to work through science problems logically and rationally are much easier to keep sharp. I’ll work on honing those skills with you. As a science fiction writer, I’ve always loved science and the scientific approach to looking at the world. I love sharing that scientific method with my students.
I’d be happy to talk about all this with you. Please call me at 303-304-9130.
